STILL LIFE Series
Still Life paintings are ancient! They were being used thousands of years ago by cultures such as the Egyptian, Greek and Roman with the intent of depicting the celebration of the seasons, of the five senses, of hospitality and of life.
In Still Life paintings, man-made and natural objects earn a position where they are appreciated for their individual value. And in their common simplicity, the depiction of these ‘pantry’ items or objects such as a bowl, a fruit or a table cloth is a very interesting pictorial exercise which offers the artist the freedom not only to choose the subject matter, but to arrange it as he/she pleases challenging the eye to create a balanced, harmonic composition using shapes and colors. In the Spanish language Still Life painting is also called ‘bodegones’, and in the time of Goya and his contemporaries ‘bodegones’ were more austere than those produced in Italy, France and the Netherlands which contained plenty of ornate and luxurious items. I tend to follow this austere trend in my Still Life works with their plain backgrounds and simple lines, but counterbalancing with bold colors and rich textures creating a somewhat more surrealist air of our time.
